Introduction

The Department of Earth Sciences was established in 1973 to produce qualified trained manpower in specialized areas of Geophysics and Geology. This was considered essential in view of expanding programmes of exploration of natural resources, particularly for Oil and Gas, Minerals & Groundwater. Further areas of priority are Hydrogeology, Earthquake Seismology, Well logging and Environmental studies, and Crustal studies. This Department is the only teaching institute in Pakistan, which awards degree (M.Sc., M.Phil & Ph.D.) in Geophysics. Our graduates have proved their worth in national and international companies engaged in exploring activities, and also have contributed towards establishment of research/development programmes in many organizations.

The Department is running M.Sc., (Morning and Evening), M.Phil & Ph.D. In M.Sc., 20 courses are offered. In addition, the students undertake extensive laboratory and fieldwork that includes data acquisition computer processing interpretation and modeling of subsurface geology. In the final semester of M.Sc., all the students have to do compulsory research as part of their thesis work. Projects are allotted and the students are supposed to submit a thesis, based on original research. So far the department has produced more than 300 graduates in Geophysics who are working in OGD, WAPDA, FATA, SDA, Punjmin, Schlumberger, Mathtech, Lasmo, OMV, Orient, POL, PPL, Premier Oil and several other national and international organizations.. Department organizes special lectures and courses with the help of experts from oil and mineral industries, and arranges visits to oil fields and different mines.

The faculty comprises of 11 teachers trained in various disciplines of Geophysics and Geology such as Gravity, Magnetic, Seismic, Electrical Resistivity Methods, Structure and Tectonics, Earthquake Seismology, Hydrogeology and Carbonate Sedimentology. Field and laboratory instruments available for research include Gravimeter, Magnetometers (for measurement of total and vertical intensity), Terrameter, Hydro logger, Seismic Data Acquisition System, Georadar, XRF, XRD, AAS, Microscopes, and machines for lapidary work.
